Site Assessment & Project Planning

Every solar decommissioning project begins with a detailed site assessment and review of the existing system. Kopp Electric evaluates the array layout, electrical equipment, roof or site conditions, access requirements, lifting and staging needs, and the owner’s plans for reuse, recycling, roof replacement, or site restoration.

 

Based on the assessment, we develop a project-specific plan for system shutdown, lockout/tagout, electrical isolation, equipment removal, material handling, scheduling, safety coordination, and closeout documentation.

Safe Shutdown & Electrical Disconnection

Before equipment removal begins, Kopp Electric develops and carries out a controlled shutdown plan for the existing solar system. Our electrical team coordinates lockout/tagout, verifies electrical isolation, and disconnects the applicable AC and DC equipment so the system can be dismantled safely.

 

The scope may include modules and strings, combiner boxes, inverters, disconnects, transformers, switchgear, monitoring equipment, conduit, and conductors. We coordinate with the owner, facility team, utility, engineer, EPC, roofing contractor, and other project stakeholders when permits, inspections, utility notifications, or additional documentation are required.

Equipment Removal & Material Handling

Once the system is safely de-energized, Kopp Electric removes the solar equipment in a controlled sequence designed to protect the building, roof, property, and surrounding operations. Our crews can remove modules, racking, ballast, inverters, combiner boxes, disconnects, transformers, conduit, conductors, monitoring equipment, and other balance-of-system components.

 

We also coordinate access equipment, cranes or lifts, temporary staging areas, palletizing, loading, transportation, and site protection as required. Equipment can be separated for reuse, resale, recycling, owner retention, or disposal based on the approved project plan.

Reuse, Recycling & Documentation

Depending on the owner’s goals and the condition of the equipment, removed solar modules and balance-of-system components can be separated for owner retention, reuse, resale, certified recycling, or disposal through approved channels. Kopp Electric coordinates inventory, palletizing, loading, transportation, and downstream material disposition as required by the project.

 

Closeout documentation can include equipment counts, photographs, shipping and load-out records, recycling or reuse certificates, chain-of-custody records, and confirmation of system removal.
